Hell is Us Beginner Tips

Survive the first act without a map, markers, or hand-holding.

Beginner Tips

Hell is Us drops you into Hadea with almost no UI guidance. There is no world map, no quest arrow, and investigations expect you to follow wind chimes, NPC hints, and landmark descriptions. These beginner tips summarize what the game teaches slowly — so your first hours feel intentional instead of frustrating.

Accept the no-map design early

The compass shows direction, not destinations. Your Datapad stores investigation text, scanned tablets, and Good Deed notes. When an NPC says to follow the path toward marked trees or listen for wind chimes, treat that as your route. For a deeper navigation primer, read No-Map Exploration alongside this page.

Master Healing Pulse before hard fights

Healing Pulse is your primary sustain. Land successful attacks to build white particles around Remi; when your health bar flashes white (or a ring appears at your waist), press RB on Xbox or R1 on PlayStation to restore HP based on damage dealt. Taking a hit cancels the pulse, and pressing the button too early during a combo wastes the charge without healing. Practice on the first Hollow enemies in Senedra Forest before the APC sections get crowded. Full timing notes live in Combat & Healing Pulse.

Pick a weapon family and commit

Four melee families define combat: sword (balanced), polearm (reach), twin axes (speed), and greatsword (heavy stagger). You can carry two weapons and swap mid-fight. Early Glyphs attach to weapons once slots unlock — prioritize one main weapon plus a backup that covers different enemy spacing. Do not spread upgrades across four weapons in Act 1; focus materials on your preferred pair.

Use the drone constantly

Your drone translates tablets, highlights interactables, and later supports combat modules. Scan every inscription near a locked door before guessing symbols. In Senedra ruins, drone scans on archive tablets reveal the Tower–Serpent–Fire sequence for the inner door — details in Puzzle Solutions if you get stuck. Out of combat, scanning is free information; skipping scans is the most common beginner mistake.

Read investigations literally

Act 1 splits into Family Reunion and Family Legacy. Objectives name places (Senedra Forest, Watcher’s Nest, Lake Cynon) and items (medkits, Vigil candles, ceramic flowers). If you are lost, open the Datapad and re-read the latest objective line — it usually contains a directional clue. The Act 1 Walkthrough lists every beat in order.

Loot medkits but do not rely on them

Medkits are rare consumables with instant heals. Save them for boss fights or mistake-heavy rooms. Between fights, use Healing Pulse and optional Lymbic consumables crafted later. Running out of medkits mid-investigation is normal; running out of pulse timing skill is fixable with practice.

Close timeloops when you see domes

Shimmering timeloop fields respawn enemies until you defeat guardians and use an Amine Prism at the anchor. Closing loops clears areas permanently and often rewards Glyphs or Relics. See Good Deeds & Timeloops for guardian patterns and missable rewards.

Talk to every NPC at hubs

APC stops introduce Tania, Ernest, and regional contacts who unlock travel, sell upgrades, and start Good Deeds. Missing a deed before leaving an act can lock Relics permanently. When dialogue offers trade or hand-over options, check your inventory for requested items before moving on.

Upgrade at the APC between investigations

Spend materials on weapon levels and passive Relics between story beats. Act 1 difficulty spikes at Lake Cynon and Acasa Mars trenches — under-leveled weapons make Healing Pulse windows too short to recover. The Tier List will rank standout Glyphs once you collect more.

Quick first-hour checklist

  1. Complete the farmhouse cellar tutorial and obtain the gate key from Ernest Caddell.
  2. Trade the OMSIF medkit to the wounded soldier for the Ancient Mechanism.
  3. Solve the Senedra entrance pillars, then scan archives for the inner door symbols.
  4. Practice Healing Pulse on every Hollow pack before exiting the ruins.
  5. Return to the APC, save, and read the next investigation before roaming.

Hell is Us rewards patience and note-taking. Keep this page bookmarked, follow the act walkthroughs for step-by-step paths, and use puzzle solutions only when clues stop making sense.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Hell is Us progression, combat, and exploration.

Can I change difficulty or turn on a map?

There is no in-game map or quest marker toggle. Difficulty options depend on platform settings, but navigation rules are fixed.

What is the best starter weapon?

Sword is the most forgiving. Twin axes excel if you already master Healing Pulse timing. Pick one family and upgrade it first.

When do Glyphs unlock?

After early weapon upgrades grant Glyph slots. Open Loadout on the Datapad to equip them and trigger with LT/L2 plus face buttons.

Should I explore off-path in Act 1?

Yes, but mark your landmark (APC, wind chimes, tall structures) before chasing side caves. Good Deeds and timeloops hide off the main route.
